Our very first broadcast of the year was filled with lively stories about the New Year holidays!

Mr. Shimizu and Mr. Suyama shared fascinating insights from their interview at Kawasaki Daishi. Many people wonder, "When exactly do the New Year's Eve bells (Joya no Kane) start ringing?" According to an Edo-period tradition that continues today, the first three rings are called Sutegane (signal bells) to announce the start. Then, the 108 rings—representing our worldly desires—begin precisely at midnight. Learning about this "time bell" culture from the Edo era and other New Year traditions was such a treat. We also had endless fun discussing regional differences in Ozoni (New Year soup) and the various shapes of mochi.

On the other hand, we talked about Komamiya Shrine in Miyazaki, a rare shrine dedicated to a horse. It is said to be where Emperor Jimmu played with a white horse (Ryuseki) in his childhood. Since 2026 is the Year of the Horse, this shrine—associated with horses leaping and galloping upward—is considered very auspicious and has recently become popular as a "power spot."

It was a broadcast full of laughter, truly a "Fukuwarai" (Lucky Laughter) start to the year. After the show, I had the pleasure of visiting Kawasaki Daishi to offer my prayers.
