January 13, 2026 – Episode 28 Personalities: Ito & Sakuraba / Navigators: Mr. Suyama & Mr. Shimizu

In this episode, we shared stories from a New Year’s banquet we recently attended at Dojoji Temple in Mukojima.

It was a wonderful dive into traditional performing arts dating back to the Edo period. We talked about the Shishimai(Lion Dance), the appearance of Daikoku-sama (the God of Wealth), Hokan (male entertainers), as well as Geisha and Hangyoku. It was particularly fascinating to discuss the cultural differences between Kyoto and Tokyo: for instance, what they call a Maiko in Kyoto is known as a Hangyoku in Tokyo, and a Geiko in Kyoto is a Geisha in Tokyo.

The conversation blossomed as we compared these regional customs, moving on to other New Year traditions like Dondo-yaki (the ritual bonfire), the varying shapes of mochi, and the different ways people enjoy eating them. Once again, we had so much to talk about that time just flew by!
